The single most useful fact for a car-free weekend is that Galway's compact centre runs roughly from Eyre Square south to the Claddagh and east along the river Corrib to the Salmon Weir Bridge. Almost everything you will want to see sits inside that triangle. Hotels around Eyre Square and Forster Street put you one minute from both the ceann cheathrú (the main bus station, beside the square) and the coach stops where Citylink and Bus Éireann services from Dublin and Shannon arrive. From there, Shop Street, the Spanish Arch and the cathedral are all a 10-15 minute walk on flat ground.
Base yourself inside the city centre triangle
Budget expectations are honest rather than cheap: expect roughly €110-170 a night for a mid-range double in this core zone at weekends in May, June and September, with July and August at the top of that band and November to March noticeably lower. Friday and Saturday nights carry the premium, and the run-up to Christmas markets and the summer festivals fills rooms early. If your priority is stepping off a coach and not touching a bus again until Sunday, this is the zone I would book.
Salthill and the promenade: sea air, one bus ride
Salthill sits about 3 km west of Eyre Square along the coast, and the 401 bus connects the two in roughly 15-20 minutes, running frequently through the day and into the evening. Hotels on the promenade and around Upper Salthill put you a short walk from the diving boards, Blackrock, the leisureland complex and the long walk back into town along the coast road. Rooms here often come with sea views at a price band similar to the centre, sometimes €10-20 lower outside high season.
The trade-off is real: you are committing to a bus or a 40-minute walk each time you want dinner in town, and late-night buses thin out. It suits couples and walkers who want a quieter base and a morning swim, less so anyone planning to sample pubs on both Friday and Saturday nights. Also skip the notion of walking from Salthill to the city centre with luggage on a rainy day; take the 401.
The Claddagh, the Docks and around the cathedral
South of the river, the Claddagh and the old docks are arguably the most atmospheric car-free base. The area around Nimmo's Pier, Long Walk and the Claddagh Quay holds a handful of small hotels and guesthouses, with the Spanish Arch and the Galway City Museum a five-minute walk away. The Latin Quarter pubs and restaurants around Quay Street and Kirwan's Lane are ten minutes on foot. Expect slightly higher weekend rates than Eyre Square and book well ahead for summer.
This zone is quiet at night, close to the water and excellent for a short break built around food, music and walking. What to skip: anything described as "docklands" that actually sits across the river near Lough Atalia, which adds 20 minutes on foot to the Latin Quarter. If you want one recommendation, I would choose the Claddagh side over Salthill for a two-night stay, and over Eyre Square if you are not arriving or leaving by an early coach.
Getting around and what to plan around
You do not need a car for the city, but two excursions reward a little planning. The 424 bus runs from the city to Spiddal along the coast, and the 350 serves the Connemara direction towards Letterfrack and Clifden, both leaving from the coach station by Eyre Square. Salthill's promenade walk to Blackrock and back is the best free hour in the city. For a weekend, Friday arrival, Saturday in the city and a Sunday coastal bus trip is a sensible rhythm, with May, June and September giving the best light and fewer crowds.
Check-in times matter more than they seem: many small Galway guesthouses close their reception mid-afternoon, so tell them your coach arrival time. Book accommodation with free cancellation where possible, as Irish weekend weather can rearrange plans, and confirm whether your room rate includes breakfast, since city cafés around Shop Street and Middle Street open early enough to make that optional. If you are travelling by coach from Dublin, the journey is about 2.5 hours; from Shannon, roughly 1.5 hours.
